If you watch my first Unfriendly Giant flash cartoon right before this one, you’ll notice a few changes I made and a few things I learned. The first thing I notice is the pitch of the audio. For some reason, I sped-up the audio on my first Unfriendly Giant cartoon. I don’t know why, but that’s how it is, and that’s how it’ll always be.

The second thing that’s different is the mouth animation/vocal sync. For my first cartoon I was happy to have a mouth at all. It moved around Unfriendly’s face a bit and got bigger and smaller. For this cartoon, I changed the mouth drawings each frame. I think there are about five or seven different shapes that match different speaking sounds. That added a lot of work to this cartoon.

I spent a lot more time making animations within animations as well. You should be able to see lots of little reoccurring movements in all the characters. Is there anything that stands out to you as an improvement over my first UFG cartoon? Or at least a difference.

There are definitely two Easter Eggs in this cartoon. One at the end and one somewhere in the middle. Can you find them? I’ll post my final of the three UFG flash cartoons on Friday.

Way back, seven or so years ago, Flash Cartoons on the internet were the thing. I watched Homestar Runner all the time. I wondered if I could make a Flash cartoon. I had always enjoyed drawing comics and making videos, but animation was a tough hobby to get into. Back in the early to mid-90′s I had tried my hand at a few short animations using my Amiga (I remember a Spaceman Spiff animation done in Deluxe Paint and something or other done with Animation Studio.) So, 2004 comes along, and I manage to get access to Adobe Flash for my Mac (I was doing some work for a company in Ottawa, and I so wish I had that work to show.) So, in my spare time, I digitized a copy of The Unfriendly Giant radio show, from cassette and thought I’d teach myself Flash animation by making an Unfriendly Giant cartoon in the same style as Homestar Runner.It took a lot of my spare time, and probably two or three weeks to come up with my first cartoon. Since it’s been conspicuously absent from the online world for a while, I figured I’d put it back up for your enjoyment.

Don’t forget to try to find the Easter Egg(s?) I can’t even remember anymore. I’ll post my other Unfriendly Giant cartoons in the coming days.
